How to Fix the 5 Most Common Cycling Aches and Pains

Cycling is supposed to be the gentle one. Low impact, easy on the joints, the cardio you can do into your 80s. So why does your knee ache at mile 15? Why are your hands numb and your neck screaming?

The good news is that most cycling aches and pains aren’t your body failing you. They’re your bike fit failing you. A bicycle locks you into one repeated position for thousands of pedal strokes, so a setup that’s off by a centimeter gets magnified until something complains. That also means most of these problems have a specific, mechanical fix.

This hits hardest for people getting back on a bike after years away, since the body that fit that bike a decade ago isn’t the body riding it now. Let’s go through the five most common complaints and the fix to try first for each.

1. Saddle Soreness

Every new cyclist knows this one. Some soreness is normal in your first couple of weeks while your sit bones adapt. Pain that never improves, or that turns into chafing and actual sores, is a setup problem.

The usual culprit is weight ending up on soft tissue instead of your sit bones. That happens when the saddle nose tilts up, when the saddle is too narrow for your anatomy, or when it’s set so high that your hips rock side to side and grind with every stroke. 2. Knee Pain

Riding puts your spine into a bent-forward position and holds it there. Fit fix first: Shorten and raise the front end. Add a spacer under the stem, flip the stem upward, or swap to a shorter stem. Also confirm your saddle isn’t too high, since rocking hips stress the lower back too. The less core strength and flexibility you have, the higher and closer your bars should be. There’s no prize for slamming your stem.

Habit fixes: Core work twice a week makes a genuine difference. Planks, side planks, and bird dogs cover the basics in ten minutes. On the bike, stand and straighten your back every so often, and increase weekly mileage gradually rather than doubling it because the weather got nice. 4. Numb Hands

Fit fix first: Level the saddle (yes, again, it fixes a lot). If your hands still go numb, raise the bars slightly or shorten the reach so your arms carry less of you. You should be able to briefly take your hands off the bars without your torso lurching forward.

Habit fixes: Change hand positions every few minutes. Tops, hoods, drops, whatever your bars offer, rotate through them. Keep a soft bend in your elbows so they absorb vibration instead of your wrists. 5. Neck Pain

To ride with your torso low, you have to tilt your head up to see the road. Hold that for two hours and the small muscles at the base of your skull fatigue, then your traps take over and start aching. The lower your bars are relative to your saddle, the more extreme that angle gets.

Equipment plays a role people miss. A helmet tipped too far forward, or glasses that sit low on your nose, force you to crane your neck even further just to see under them.

Fit fix first: Raise the front end. Spacers under the stem, a flipped stem, or compact bars all reduce how far your neck has to extend. This is the same fix as lower back pain, which isn’t a coincidence. Both come from a front end that’s lower and longer than your body can support.
